Society of Professional Journalists News: Florida International University professor Chris Delboni named outstanding campus adviser

INDIANAPOLIS — The Society of Professional Journalists has named Chris Delboni as the David L. Eshelman Outstanding Campus Adviser Award recipient. Delboni teaches at Florida International University, where she advises the student SPJ chapter.

The Outstanding Campus Chapter Adviser Award, initiated in 1978, is presented annually to a person who has made an exceptional contribution to the campus chapter for which he or she serves as SPJ adviser. In 1993, the SPJ board voted to change the award name to the David Eshelman Outstanding Campus Adviser Award in order to honor Eshelman, a longtime member of the Society and Board “Parliamentarian,” who was killed in 1993. In nomination letters, students credited Delboni with guidance, mentorship and dedication since theFlorida International University’s SPJ Chapter founding in 2012.

“With her guidance, I came to understand that journalism is a continuous process of pushing my own limits of creativity and observation. Because of Chris, journalism students at FIU harness the will to be a journalist first,” wrote Brittny Valdes, FIU SPJ Chapter alumni relations co-director.

Delboni will be honored at the Excellence in Journalism Conference in Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 4 to 6.
